皆さんは年３回、公益財団法人日本英語検定協会によって実施される「英検®」 (実用英語技能検定)を受験されたことはありますか？

英検®

国内で受験できる英語系の資格・検定は数多くありますが、英検®は小さい子供から大人まで幅広く知られており、チャレンジした経験のある方も多いのではないでしょうか。

ご存じの方も多いかと思いますが、英検®は、５級(初級)、４級、３級、準２級、２級、準１級、１級(上級）の７つのグレードに分かれており、「聞く、読む、書く、話す」の４技能を測定し合否がでます。

最近では、５歳の子が２級に合格するなど、小さいお子さんも英語学習を頑張っているニュースをよく耳にしますが、２級のレベルは高校卒業程度とされていますので、本当にびっくりです。

英検S-CBT(Computer Based Testing）

そんな英検®が今年の４月から、毎週土日に受験できることになったのをご存じですか？

しかも、一日で、スピーキング（二次面接試験）まで終わらせることができるのです！　

従来の英検®が毎週土日に受けることができるようになったテストが、「英検S-CBT(Computer Based Testing）」です。

と言っても、従来通りの方法ではなく、パソコンでの受験になります。受験できる級も３級～準１級のみで、５級、４級、そして１級は受験できず、全てのレベルを実施しているわけではありません。

ですが、従来型英検は、筆記テストを受け、合格した人が二次面接試験を後日受験するという流れですので、この英検S-CBTが一日で全て終わるのは嬉しいですね。

受けたいけれどパソコンでの受験にちょっと不安を感じている方もいると思いますので、私が受験してみた感想をお伝えしたいと思います。

受験当日

私は名古屋国際センタービルでの受験でした（自宅のパソコンでは受験できません）。私にとっては初めてのパソコンでの試験なので、緊張しまくりだったので、ネットで英検S-CBTのことをとにかく調べました。

特に、ライティング（作文）とスピーキング（面接）のパートがどのように進むのかが不安で、動画をしっかり見て流れを予習していきました。

不安な方は動画で確認されることをおすすめします。視聴すれば、パソコン操作もあまり難しくなく、少し安心すると思います。

センターに到着し、まず驚いたのは。人数の少なさ。受験会場によって全く違う状況だと思いますし、私の受験日は６月だったので、コロナの影響で少なかったのかもしれません。

受付を済まし、受験票、鉛筆（シャーペン）と消しゴム（まわりのカバーは外す）のみ持ち、あとはロッカーに入れて、それぞれの部屋に案内されました。

パソコンがたくさん並び、それぞれパーテーションで仕切ってあり、スピーキング用のヘッドセットが置いてありました。

係の人の案内にそって、パソコンに個人番号とパスワードを入力し、ヘッドセットを着けて、音量とマイクのチェックをしました。

そんなにあせることもなくゆっくり進みますし、部屋の中の人数が少なく、係の人にいつでも聞くことができるので、不安な人も大丈夫です！

パソコンで答えも入力すると思っている人もいると思いますが、従来の英検と同じくマークシートを配られました。

リーディング、リスニング、ライティングテストは、問題はパソコンで見ますが、答えはマークシートを鉛筆でぬりつぶすという流れ。

特にライティング（作文）も手書きなので、私のようなパソコンの苦手な人にとっては少し安心できる流れですね。笑　

スピーキングテスト

試験が始まり、最初にスピーキング(面接試験)でした。パソコンに外国人の面接官が映り、質問をしてきます。この面接官は、実際その時間にリモートで話しているわけではなく、事前に録画したものです。

従来の対面型の面接試験と同じく、ウォーミングアップのための簡単な質問から入りますので、元気よくしっかりとした声で答えることをオススメします。

問題形式はパッセージを読んで質問に答えるなど、従来の試験と同じですし、質問数も同じです。

一度で聞き取れなかった時は、「もう一度聞いてやりなおす」をクリックすれば、2回まで聞きなおすことができます。

従来の対面式だと、One more time please!  や　Could you speak that again! など　面接官に言うのがはずかしくて言えなかった人もいると思いますが、英検S-CBTでは、クリックするだけで聞きなおすことができるので安心ですね！　

スピーキングテストでひとつ思ったのが、始めるタイミングです。準備ができた人から始めてよいのですが、あまり早くはじめてしまうと、同じ部屋の受験生に話していることが全て聞こえます。気にしない方はよいですが、気になる方もいますよね。

部屋の中で話しているのが自分だけなのは少しはずかしいので、私は何人かの声が聞こえてきてから始めました。笑

あまりゆっくりしていても、他の受験生が終わってシーンとしている中で、自分だけが英語で質問に答えている状況なので、まわりの人たちに聞かれます。

これは私が受けてみての感想なので、全く気にしない人はどんなタイミングで始めようと関係ないと思います。私ははずかしがりやなので。笑

リスニングとライティング

スピーキングの後は、リスニングとリーディングです。問題形式は従来型と同じです。答えはマークシートを塗りつぶします。

最後にライティング（作文）があります。先ほども言いましたがこちらもパソコン入力ではなく、鉛筆で回答用紙に書き込みます。

受験した感想

全体としての感想は、スピーキング（従来の二次面接）が、対面ではないため戸惑うこともあるかもしれませんが、他はほとんど変わらないので、1日で終わる英検S-CBTは、忙しい方にはかなり良いと思います。

そしてなんと、終わった人から退場できます！　最高ですよね！　従来型の英検®は早く終わっても、決められたテスト終了時間までは退場できません。時間を有効活用できるので、私は次回も英検S-CBTを受けることにします。

面接官と対面でお話できなのは少し残念な気もしますが、自分の予定にあわせて受験できますし、たった数時間で終わるなんて、本当に最高！　おすすめです！

My First Eiken S-CBT Exam

Have you ever taken Eiken® (Practical English Proficiency Test), held three times a year by Eiken Foundation of Japan?

There are many English language qualifications and examinations that can be taken in Japan, but the EIKEN® is widely known by everyone from children to adults, and many of you may have had the experience of taking it.

As many of you may know, EIKEN® is divided into seven grades: Level 5 (beginner), Level 4, Level 3, Level pre-2, Level 2, Level pre-1, and Level 1 (advanced).

The test measures the four skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

Recently, I’ve heard a lot of news about young children learning English, such as a five-year-old child who passed the Level 2 test, which is really surprising since the Level 2 test is considered to be equivalent to high school graduation.

Did you know that from April this year, you can now take the EIKEN® exam every Saturday and Sunday?

And you can even complete the speaking test (second interview) in one day!　

The new test is called “Eiken S-CBT (Computer Based Testing)” and can be taken every Saturday and Sunday.

However, the test can not be taken in the traditional way, but by computer. And also you can only take the level 3 to level 1 test, not the level 5, 4 and 1 test.

In the conventional Eiken, you have to take a written test, and then those who pass the test have to take a second interview test at a later date. Therefore, I am glad that the Eiken S-CBT can be completed all in one day.

I’m sure there are people who want to take the test but are a little nervous about taking it on a computer, so I’d like to share with you my experience of taking the test.

I took the test at the Nagoya International Center Building (you cannot take the test on your home computer). Since it was my first time to take the test on a computer, I was very nervous. So I just researched about Eiken S-CBT on the Internet.

Because I was especially anxious about how the writing (essay) and speaking (interview) parts would proceed, I watched the short movie on the Internet carefully to prepare myself for the process.

If you are unsure, I recommend you watch them before the test. If you watch them at home, you will feel a little more comfortable to take the test.

When I arrived at the center, the first thing that surprised me was how few people were there. I guess the situation is completely different depending on the test site, and since my test day was in June, there might have been fewer people due to the influence of Corona Virus.

After completing the registration, I took only my examination voucher, pencils (mechanical pencils) and erasers (with the covers removed), put the rest in my locker. Then I was allowed to go into the exam room.

There were many computers lined up, each separated by a partition, and there was a speaking headset on each desk.

Following the guidance of the attendant, I entered my personal number and password into the computer. Then put on the headset, and checked the volume and microphone.

There were only a few people in the room, and you could ask the staff at any time, so if you were worried, don’t worry!

Some people may think that you have to type in the answers on the computer, but we were given mark sheets just like in the traditional Eiken.

For the reading, listening, and writing tests, the questions were viewed on the computer, but the answers were given by coloring in the mark sheets with a pencil.

Especially since the writing (essays) are also handwritten, it’s a bit of a relief process for someone like me who is not good with computers. lol　

The first part was the speaking (interview) test. A foreign interviewer appears on the computer and asks you questions. This interviewer is not actually speaking remotely at that time, but is recorded beforehand.

Just like in a traditional face-to-face interview, you will start with simple questions to warm up, and you should answer them in an energetic and firm voice.

The format of the questions is the same as the traditional test, such as reading the passage and answering the questions, and the number of questions is the same.

If you don’t understand a question the first time, you can click on the “Listen again and try again” button to listen to the question up to two more times.

In a traditional face-to-face test, some people may have been too embarrassed to say things like “One more time please!” or “Could you speak that again!” to the interviewer, but with the Eiken S-CBT, you can just click and listen again.　

One thing that struck me about the speaking test is the timing of starting. You can start when you are ready, but if you start too early, the students in the same room will hear everything you are saying. If you don’t mind, that’s fine, but there are some people who do mind.

It was a little embarrassing to be the only one talking in the room, so I started when I heard some voices. lol!

But if you take it too slow, people around you will hear you answering questions in English while other students have already finished the test.

This is just my impression after taking the test, so if you don’t mind at all, it doesn’t matter when you start. I’m a bit shy. lol

After speaking, there was listening and reading. The format of the questions is the same as the traditional ones. You have to fill in the answers on a mark sheet.

Lastly, there is writing (essay). As I mentioned earlier, you don’t type on a computer, but write on an answer sheet with a pencil.

My overall impression is that the speaking portion (the traditional second interview) may be a bit confusing since it is not face-to-face, but the rest of the test is almost the same. So Eiken S-CBT, which can be completed in one day, is quite good for busy people.

And wow, you can leave the room after you’re done!　Isn’t that great!　With the traditional Eiken®, even if you finish early, you can’t leave until the allotted end time of the test, which means that you have to wait until the end of the test.

If you want to talk to the interviewer face-to-face, maybe it’s a little disappointing. But it’s really great that you can take the test on your own schedule and it only takes a few hours!
