海外で住みたい街ランキンぎ2位にも選ばれたシンガポール。勝手に海外の中でも安全な街なのかなと思っています。

シングリッシュ

私は2年前シンガポールに行った時に初めてシングリッシュという言葉を知りました。

みなさん、「シングリッシュ」という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？

シングリッシュとは、 Singapore（シンガポール）とEnglish（英語）をかけあわせた言葉だそうです。

旅行計画

2年前、どこかに旅行に行きたい！と思い、どこへ行こうかと考えた末に、とにかく英語が話したかった私は、英語が公用語の国を調べました。すると、前から行ってみたいと思っていたシンガポールは英語が公用語だと知り、迷うことなくシンガポールを旅行先に決めたのです。

みなさんも海外旅行に行くと決めたら、その国のことを色々調べると思います。私も、通貨や気候、食べ物、人々、観光地、など旅行雑誌やWebでシンガポールのことを事前にたくさん調べました。

シンガポールは女子旅に人気の行き先でもあるので、ショッピングが楽しめそうな場所がたくさんありますが、私の今回の旅の目的は、海に近い場所でのんびりすることでしたので、セントーサ島を中心に旅のプランを考えました。

シンガポールへ出発

当日、香港で乗り継ぎのある格安航空券だったため、シンガポールに到着したのは午前1時を過ぎていました。

世界的に人気の空港

イギリスの航空サービス格付け会社「スカイトラックス」による『ワールド・エアポート・アワード』では、シンガポールのチャンギ空港は、「世界の空港ランキング」でなんと8年連続総合1位を獲得している空港で、トップクラスの設備やサービスがある世界的に人気の空港なのです。

ちなみに、日本の空港はとても優秀で、2020年の総合ランキングでは、羽田空港が2位、成田国際空港が7位、中部国際空港が8位、関西国際空港が10位なのです！　

４つの空港がTOP10入りしているなんてすごいですよね！

話がずれましたが、到着時間が遅いため、空港内のホテルに泊まる予定にしていたので、すぐにホテルへと向かいました。

本当に大きい空港で、時間が遅かったため暗い場所もあり、よくわからなかったので、空港のスタッフにホテルへの行き方をたずねてやっと到着しました。

空港やホテルのスタッフとのやり取りしかまだしていない初日でしたが、この時点で私は自分の英語に自信がなくなり始めていました。

英語が聞き取れないことにショック

そんなに自分の英語に自信があるというわけではありませんが、旅先でこれほどまでに英語が聞き取れないことがなかったのです。

久々の海外旅行だからかな？とその時はそこまで気にすることもなかったのですが、次の日空港から出て、セントーサ島に着いてからも、ホテルの人の言っていることがとても聞き取りづらかったのです。

一体どうして？　英語は公用語のはず…　もちろん同じ英語を話すと言っても国それぞれのアクセントがあるので、全て同じに聞こえてくるわけではないのは私も知っています。

日本人の話す英語も日本人独特のアクセントがありますし。

英語のことが気になりながらも、シンガポール2日目は、USS（ユニバーサルスタジオ・シンガポール）に行く予定でしたので向かいました。

旅の目的は海の近くでのんびりすることと、先ほど書きましたが、ユニバーサルスタジオが大好きな私は、USSには絶対に行きたかったので、外せませんでした。笑

優しい現地の人たち

現地の方々が本当に優しくて、英語が聞き取れない私に嫌な顔をするわけでもなく、親切にしてくれました。

色々助けられましたが、道がわからない時は、その目的地まで連れて行ってくれたり、使い方がわからない時は、説明だけでなく一緒にやってくれたり、あたたかい気持ちになりました。

私が話す英語は通じているのに、現地の方の英語が聞き取れないのがなぜなのか気になってしかたがなかったので、ホテルの部屋でシンガポールの言語について調べました。

その時初めて「Singlish (シングリッシュ）」という言葉を知ったのです。

シングリッシュの特徴

シングリッシュの特徴が調べて少しわかりました。

①　アメリカ英語ではなくイギリス英語をベースとしている。

②　シンガポール国民の母語である中国語やマレー語（マレーシア）、タミル語（インド）など複数の言語がまじっている。

③　テレビなどの影響で、アメリカ英語やオーストラリア英語の単語や文法からも影響を受けている。

私の決意

多民族・多文化国家であるシンガポールの特徴が凝縮された言語だと知り、なんだかとても楽しくなり、シングリッシュを頑張って聞き取れるようになって帰ろう！と気合が入りました。

シンガポール旅行の残り3日は、シングリッシュのリスニングを強化する！と決心し、現地の人たちにたくさん話しかけ、徐々に理解できるようになる楽しさを感じて過ごしました。

英語だから安心！と言語について何も調べて行かなかったですが、最初に感じた違和感や緊張も含め、ステキな時間を過ごすことができました。

その国や地域に行かなければ体験できないことがあると気づかされ、世界の文化や言語にあらためて興味を持つことができた旅になりました。

Singapore x English = “Singlish”

I first learned the word “Singlish” when I went to Singapore two years ago.

Have you ever heard of the word “Singlish”?

The word “Singlish” is a combination of Singapore and English.

Two years ago, I wanted to go on a trip somewhere! When I was thinking about where to go, I wanted to speak English, so I looked up countries where English was the official language.

Then I found out that Singapore, which I had always wanted to visit, was an official English-speaking country. So I decided to go there without hesitation.

When you decide to go on a trip abroad, you probably do a lot of research about the country. I, too, did a lot of research on Singapore through travel magazines and the web, including the currency, climate, food, people, and tourist attractions.

Singapore is a popular destination for women travelers, and there are many places where you can enjoy shopping. But my goal for this trip was to relax near the sea, so I planned my trip around Sentosa Island.

Since I had a cheap flight with a connection in Hong Kong, it was past 1:00 a.m. when I arrived in Singapore.

In the “World Airport Awards” by Skytrax, a British air service rating company, Singapore’s Changi Airport has been ranked number one overall in the “World Airport Rankings” for eight consecutive years. Changi Airport is one of the world’s most popular airports with top-class facilities and services.

Incidentally, Japan’s airports are also very good, with Haneda Airport ranked 2nd, Narita International Airport 7th, Chubu International Airport 8th, and Kansai International Airport 10th in the 2020 overall rankings!　

That’s pretty impressive to have four airports in the top ten!

As I mentioned earlier, I was planning to stay at a hotel in the airport due to my late arrival time, so I headed to the hotel immediately.

It was a really big airport, and since it was late, I didn’t know how to get to the hotel in the dark, so I asked the airport staff how to get there.

It was my first day, and I had only spoken to the airport and hotel staff, but at this point I was starting to lose confidence in my English.

It’s not that I’m that confident in my English, but I’ve never had such a hard time hearing English while traveling.

Maybe it was because it had been a while since I traveled abroad. But the next day, after I left the airport and arrived at Sentosa Island, I had a hard time understanding what the hotel staff was saying.

Why on earth?　I thought English was the official language…　Of course, I know that even if we speak the same English, it doesn’t mean that it all sounds the same because each country has its own accent.

English spoken by Japanese people also has an accent.

Even though I was worried about my English skills, I was planning to visit USS (Universal Studios Singapore) on the second day, so I headed there.

The purpose of my trip was to relax near the ocean, and as I mentioned earlier, I love Universal Studios, so I couldn’t miss the USS because I definitely wanted to visit it. lol!

The local people were really kind to me, and they didn’t seem to mind that I couldn’t understand their English.

They helped me in many ways. For example, when I didn’t know the way, they took me to the destination, and when I didn’t know how to use something, they not only explained but also worked with me. That made me feel warm and fuzzy.

I couldn’t help thinking why I couldn’t understand the local people’s English while they could understand my English. So I looked up “the language of Singapore” on the Internet in my hotel room.

It was the time when I first learned the word “Singlish”.

I found out some of the characteristics of Singlish.

1) It is based on British English, not American English.

2) It is a mixture of several languages, including Chinese (the native language of Singaporeans), Malay (Malaysia), and Tamil (India).

3) Due to the influence of television and other media, the vocabulary and grammar of American English and Australian English are also influenced.

When I learned that Singapore is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country, I enjoyed the language very much, and I was determined to do my best to learn Singlish and be able to understand it. I was really excited to go home with a better understanding of Singlish.

For the remaining three days of my trip to Singapore, I decided to strengthen my Singlish listening skills!

I spent the rest of the trip talking to many local people and feeling the joy of gradually being able to understand them.

I thought, “No worries, language in Singapore is English!” That’s why I didn’t do any research on the language before the trip. However, despite the initial discomfort and nervousness I felt about the language, I was able to have a wonderful time.

This trip made me realize that there are things you can only experience if you go to that country or region. And it gave me a renewed interest in the world’s cultures and languages.
